We were asked to produce prototype resin bottles for Coca Cola from CAMAD for marketing purposes.
The original file was provided by CAMAD and we printed it out on our Prusa MK3 3D printer in PLA filament. The next step was to sand the bottle smooth. We started with Bondo spot putty and filler primer to remove most of the print lines. Mixing it up between wet and dry sanding, we finally got a smooth, gloss like finish on the bottle.
Since we want these to be solid resin, we would need to make a mold. We used Mold Max 30 from Smooth On. Mold Max 30 is a tin cure silicone and it not as finicky as a platinum cure. We used Smooth Cast 327 resin from Smooth On. This is a clear resin that works well with dyes and can cure bubble free with the use of a pressure pot. We poured in 2 steps, the first pour was the top since the mold is upside down and the second pour would be the coloured resin.
After the resin bottle cured, it needed to be sanded and polished. We wet sanded the bottle from 150 grit following it along to 2000 grit. After it is smooth, we used NOVUS Polishing System which we picked up at Sculpture Supply Canada and we achieved a glass like finish.
These bottles feel amazing in the hand and feel very premium. With a light source or labelling, these would make an amazing display piece at a store or office.
