Halo Reach M6G Magnum

This was my very first weapon molding and casting.

I decided to create the iconic M6G Magnum from Halo Reach. I started in 2013 experimenting with silicone molding materials and Polyurethane casting resin. The Halo Reach M6G was my introduction into this world. I learned a lot from my very first mold and casting.

I made the original model using a pepakura file found on the 405th.com and traced the templates onto matte board found in a local crafts store. Matte board is the material used before picture frames. I applied fiberglass resin to the model once it was glued together. I applied Bondo auto body filler to the exterior of the model and began sanding down and spraying primer between layers.  I used a combination of acrylic and aerosol paints to achieve a factory fresh or weathered look.

Production + New Materials

After a few copies from the mold, I experiments with pressure and new materials. We recently purchased a vacuum chamber to cast clear resin bubble free. With this, we had some extra clear resin laying around. In turn, I poured some into my M6G mold and a clear magnum came out! This perfectly replicates an active camo weapon from the Halo series. Experimenting further revealed that sanding the casting with a light sandpaper and using a clear coat would create an extremely smooth surface while not sacrificing the clear look.

After a recent update in Halo 5 Guardians, 343i added in a custom variant of the M6H Magnum - calling it the War Fighter variant. The difference in this one is that there were no aim-down-sights, no scope, no light/laser, hand guard and sported an extended magazine. I decided to take some creative freedom and do my own custom War Fighter M6G Magnum. I took an original cast of my Reach Magnum and modified it almost completely from scratch. On top of removing a bunch of pieces, I added in a casted copy of a picatanny rail to attach any attachment. Which makes sense in the real world as the laser, light and range finder would be attached to the bottom of the barrel.
