We had the pleasure of building a massive 6ft-tall opening egg prop for a Toronto Raptors and TurboTax commercial. The challenge? It had to be solid, hollow, have a functional lid, and fit an actor inside—all within a 72-hour build!
The project started with a stacked plywood base, with ribbed plywood frames to define the shape. Wire mesh and metal armature wires added strength, while expanding foam secured the spacing. The lid was temporarily held in place during construction for alignment.
For the exterior, we chose Sculptamold—a non-toxic material that dries quickly and naturally resembles eggshell texture. Once cured, we marked and cut the “crack” lines from the inside for precision. Extra expanding foam was used along the edges for thickness, and the back was reinforced with wood to support a hinged lid.
To enhance realism, we applied a gray wash to highlight details before delivering the egg to Scotiabank Arena for the shoot. Seeing it come to life on set was an egg-cellent experience!
