We created a custom prop cake for a Toronto Raptors x TurboTax commercial. Designed entirely from non-food materials, the cake was built to withstand transportation and the heat of the set. It was intentionally left “unfinished” so the Raptors mascot could complete the decoration on camera.
The base was carved from styrofoam, while the majority of the frosting was made from dyed drywall spackling, applied using piping tips and spatulas for a realistic texture. The basketball topper was a vinyl/rubber ball. The Raptor hand and mascot figurine were sculpted from Sculpey oven-bake clay over custom wire armatures. For added detail, the jersey was crafted from vinyl, and the black “chocolate” drip was made from Glossy Mod Podge tinted black.
